Abstract

The industrialization-driven growth has ushered in economic progress over the past few centuries. However, it has also raised serious concerns about the sustainability of life on this planet. Despite considerable attempts to address sustainability issues using newer frameworks and efforts by corporates as well as governmental, and non-governmental institutions, we have remained ineffective in implementing sustainable solutions. The “last mile” to successfully implementing sustainable solutions is the individual. This calls for addressing individual values and aligning them to sustainability. This paper presents a fresh perspective on the problem by drawing some insights from the Bhagavad Gītā. We introduce the basic premise of yajña as propounded in the Gītā and distill key messages related to sustainability. We show that the notion of Yajña provides valuable insights that can help individuals imbibe a culture of sustainability as a way of life. This change at the individual level will go a long way in effectively implementing sustainable solutions.
